Where is the World’s Most Romantic Destination?

Jean-Michel Cousteau Resort can offer you everything. Here are just five suggestions for romantic things to do with the person you love while staying with us.

  1. Jean-Michel Cousteau Resort offers a nearby private island which you can have all to yourselves. If that wasn’t enough, a meal can be prepared, delivered, and set for you there. With champagne on ice, the luxury of privacy, feel free to lay together, listening to the gentle waves beat against the shore as palm trees sway above. Romance to remember.
  2. Visit a waterfall and hold each other as the fresh water falls upon you, nudging you downstream in each other’s arms.
  3. Be among tropical fish and colourful coral. Learn to Scuba Dive or you can snorkel across the surface and explore the exquisite and vibrant underwater world among some of the world’s finest dive sites. Be hand in hand under warm water and experience so much for the first time.
  4. Luxurious spa treatments are awesome, but are they romantic? Yeah, completely. What is better than laying in each others arms after being pampered, completely relaxed, lightly oiled, fully comfortable with the person you have chosen.
  5. Indulge in taste sensations. Meals and cocktails served at Jean-Michel Cousteau Resort make full use of the local exotic ingredients. There are unusual and strange sounding foods you haven’t tried before prepared by master chefs blending perfectly foods you know and love with something exciting and new.

The ultimate romantic destination requires privacy and a quality service. Jean-Michel Cousteau’s award-winning service is proven and the convenience of Fijian’s speaking English in addition to their mother tongue shouldn’t be understated. Romance is stymied by confusion and misunderstanding. You don’t want frustration, you want to go where you can get what you want when you want it presented as you asked for. Jean-Michel Cousteau Resort is here for you.

Romance shouldn’t be limited to couples traveling on their own. Arguably, those most deserving of the ultimate romantic experience are those who have already spent years together. If you have raised each other’s children and have been so involved with each other for so long than you forget to appreciate one another, you deserve perfection. This means you ought to be even more mindful of making use of this opportunity to celebrate your love and commitment to one another while away.

That’s why one of the best parts of the private island getaway might be that it also comes with the inclusive kids club (which is essentially the greatest childcare service you’ve known) where you can be confident in the safety and happiness of your little ones while equally confident that won’t interrupt you. You deserve this and it is available to you, so treat yourselves.

Jean-Michel Cousteau Resort has a special offers available for our guests seeking romance:

Romance Package: Pay for four nights and receive two free nights!

The person you love can be served with peace, quiet, sun, sand and more excellent choices than you have time for.  Visit Jean-Michel Cousteau Resort in Fiji.

SCUBA stands for Self-Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus. It is possible to become trained in scuba diving and gain a globally recognized PADI certification, all within a family vacation.

You can swim with fish large and small, connect with the tranquility of Fiji’s tropical waters and broaden your understanding of how spectacular our planet is. There is a small amount of studying and a huge amount to talk about. This is an ideal activity to share with your nearest and dearest as they get older and start taking part in the world on their own.

Jean-Michel Cousteau Resort trains more divers in Fiji than any other resort. To take part you need to be at least 10 years of age. For those who are 15 years of age and above, the full Open Water certification is something you can keep and use for the rest of your life and is recognized all over the globe.

Jean-Michel Cousteau Resort offers resident marine biologists to assist with expanding your knowledge.

When You Think of Sustainability, What You Should Ask

When you think of Sustainability, ask: How do I want my world to be like and how do I sustain that?

Sustainability is a popular and worthwhile idea, but what would sustainable employment look like? At
Jean-Michel Cousteau Resort there are many people who have worked here for twenty years and
longer. That’s pretty sustained, but not what people mean by “sustainable”.

Empowering Employees in Local Communities

Meet Pete (pronounced “Pe-tay”), Pete is one such twenty-plus year employee at Jean-Michel Cousteau Resort. Pete works in guests services and he’s from Nukubulavu village, which is the nearest village to the resort and where the majority of resort employees come from. No lengthy commute required, with some people walking along the beach to work (yes, please). Because Jean-Michel Cousteau Resort puts so much time and effort into training employees and developing leadership roles, this has a long-term benefit to a community who are made up of highly skilled and highly trained people. This might be the key to sustainability, by spreading knowledge and with it empowerment, influence and independence.

Relationship with the Natural Environment

Conscientiousness comes naturally in Fiji. For most who make the excellent choice to stay with us, it is the connection made with local people which fills the heart with goodness. You can’t train someone to be a pleasure to be around, it comes from the Fijian way of living and the innate openness and sincere enjoyment people in Fiji live with. That’s sustainable.

Bonds that Last

This is Maria. Maria is a nanny and she is part of the fabulous Bula Club, where young children staying at Jean-Michel Cousteau Resort receive one-on-one care. By developing new friendships and connections between guests and workers, those who return home have a piece of a distant land in their heart, carrying a greater understanding of those from a different and distant culture within. This is a key part of sustainability globally, as people from different walks of life get to know and enjoy each others company spreading laughter, mutual appreciation and respect. Sustain that!

Jean-Michel Cousteau resort is also more typically sustainable with many years of planning and action in becoming a leading Eco Friendly holiday destination in addition to being an award-winning family friendly resort offering world-class diving and snorkelling.

How can I learn about sustainability while on holiday in Fiji?

At Jean-Michel Cousteau Resort Fiji guests have ample activities to choose from and many are not what you expect. Sure, there is world class diving, exceptional snorkelling sites, waterfall visits, spa treatments, kayaking, and so much more of the excellence Jean-Michel Cousteau Resort is known for, but this award-winning luxury family friendly resort offers less common choices too, including:

Junior Chef Program

Children want to learn and want to be involved. Incorporating an education with fun activities is the best way to learn. That’s why children take a tour of Jean-Michel Cousteau Resort’s organ garden and learn about organic farming practices as they harvest fresh produce, dressing in a chef’s uniform before helping prepare fresh and healthy meals in the Bula Club Kitchen.

Our Organic Garden provides 20 per cent of food for our guests.

What do your kids have to look forward to on a family holiday in Fiji?

Mangrove Planting

Mangrove Planting brings many benefits. Mangroves are fish nurseries, providing a safe haven for juvenile fish as well as protecting shores against coastline erosion. Jean-Michel Cousteau Resort guests have worked with our resident marine biologists to plant 7,500 mangrove saplings in the last year alone. Whoop!

Coral Planting

Guests can choose to take part in coral rehabilitation by planting coral! Healthy and abundant coral landscapes are essential to marine biodiversity. This ongoing project has led to a snorkel trail and is another example of the sustainable contributions led by Jean-Michel Cousteau Resort’s marine biologists.

Medicinal Walk

Fiji has a longstanding culture of traditional medicine. Jean-Michel Cousteau Resort doesn’t encourage the use of these traditional medicines over Western medicines, however we do want to preserve this knowledge and share it with others, which is why Jean-Michel Cousteau Resort has built an extensive collection of indigenous medicines and rare plants -some of which are extinct in the wild. Guests can learn about how these age-old practices were applied from a village elder..

The Family Resort in Fiji Where New Friendships are on the Menu

When you have been to Fiji you leave with a leading memory: ‘The Fijian people’. Jean-Michel Cousteau Resort, a Family Luxury Resort, is located in what Fijian people call “The Friendly North”, famed for the openness and warmth of its residents.

When there is such natural beauty in Fiji, warm weather, world class coral reefs, marine life and lush landscapes, why is it guests comments are about the friendly Fijians? Comments like, “The staff at the resort made for an exceptional experience and we can’t wait to go back.” and “I saw people actually cry when they left this place, it is so wonderful.”?

We’d like to introduce some of our heartwarming staff, who are so easy to connect with.

Fiji Marine Biologist - Johnny Singh

Johnny Singh is a resident Marine Biologist and Naturalist. Say what now? Yes, Jean-Michel Cousteau Resort Fiji is the only resort to employ full-time marine biologists to help visitors appreciate Fiji’s best diving and snorkeling and to understand the Cousteau philosophy. Johnny is from Fiji, studied here and also in Australia, where he earned his master’s degree from James Cook University.

Johnny is passionate about the environment, conservation, sustainability, and educating guests of all ages about the environment. At Jean-Michel Cousteau Resort, he plays four key roles:

Guest Education Informing guests about Fiji’s natural heritage, snorkeling (both day and night trips – can you spell bioluminescence?), evening presentations, all to guide guests of all ages in how to help protect the environment through action and advocacy in our daily lives.

As Environmental Coordinator. Johnny’s resort projects include integrated landscaping, creating renewable energy sources, organic gardening, recycling grey water for wetlands, composting, and more. He also ensures the resort uses eco sensitive products.

Research With the belief that we must understand something before we are able to protect it, Johnny conducts reef checks at dive sites in order to assess the health of the reefs. Guests and other volunteers are always welcome to join Johnny on these reef checks.

Local Outreach Johnny takes his educational tour on the road and visits local schools, giving presentations, sharing knowledge, and helping future generations of Fijians so that they are aware of the importance of preserving their local environment.

Not only is Johnny a delight to be around, he’s responsible for restoring mangroves in the area, repopulating nearby reefs with giant clams, and measuring the benefits of marine protected areas.

If you think this work sounds all very hip and new, Johnny Singh has been doing this work at Jean-Michel Cousteau Resort Fiji for fourteen years! When asked what project was his favourite, Johnny said, “I love all of it.”

As an example of how close guest connections run with those who work at the resort, Johnny’s daughter connects with a young past guest every Sunday to chat over Messenger. The family has been back to Jean-Michel Cousteau Resort five times and when away, one of their children communicate weekly with a friend made in Fiji.

Fiji Resort Sraff - Veiwili

Veiwili began his career at the resort as a trainee in our Food and Beverage area (restaurant). He has become one of the superstars on the floor (that’s serving floor, not dance floor -although he probably lights up a dance floor too!).

We’re so glad and grateful to have him in the team. Veiwili grew up in a fairly remote and isolated part of the island we are located on. Something about where he originates from contributed to this special person you are sure to gravitate to.

Fiji Resort - Talei

If you’ve been to Jean-Michel Cousteau Resort before, there is a good chance you remember Talei and her wonderful and welcoming smile. Talei has been at the Fiji Family Luxury Resort for nearly two decades. After running our world renowned Bula Club (Fiji’s best educational, interactive and fun Kids Club) for fourteen years, Talei is now in charge of running our restaurant (more about our fine dining experience and organic menu).

Fiji is brimming with ancient traditions and a history like no other. Discover a world of tradition through our range of cultural activities.

Enjoy a traditional lovo feast

Every Tuesday night, our in-house chef Raymond Lee and his team treat our guests to a traditional Fijian lovo feast. This cooking method has been adopted throughout the South Pacific and delivers unbeatable flavour and juiciness.

The lovo involves wrapping an array of ingredients in banana leaves and cooking them in an underground fire pit for a number of hours to create tender and delectable results.

Once cooked, Raymond presents the delicacies in a buffet style for everyone to dig in and enjoy.

Have you experienced a lovo feast?A traditional Fijian lovo feast is a must-do when staying at the Jean-Michel Cousteau Resort.

Experience a Fijian kava ceremony

On Tuesday, we also give our guests the opportunity to partake in an authentic kava ceremony.

This age old tradition features the kava drink – a safe, non-alcoholic beverage made from the ground root of a South Pacific black pepper tree. Kava has been found to induce relaxation and give a slight numbing effect, which is completely normal and safe if consumed in moderation.

It's important to follow the cultural practices when accepting kava, all of which can be found on our recent kava ceremony blog post.

Join our complimentary village excursion

Tuesday is a non-stop day of culture as it's the day of the week where guests can join our complimentary excursion to the local Nukubalavu village. Here, visitors can meet the village chief, Tui Nasavusavu, and spend the afternoon watching traditional dance presentations, and arts and craft demonstrations. It's a great trip for the whole family to enjoy, and the perfect way to immerse yourself in Fijian culture.

Visit a local church service

In Fiji, Sunday is 'Siga Tabu' –  a day of rest and relaxation. It's also the day of the week where guests can experience a traditional Fijian church service.

Transport runs to various denomination services including Methodist and Catholic for the 9am services. Visitors can listen to the angelic voices of the choir and find out what is involved in these religious practices.

It's important to wear smart, modest clothing, with shoulders and knees covered.

Learn how to weave

Every Friday, guests can sign up for a lesson in weaving held by ladies of the local village. Here, you'll use a variety of traditional Fijian methods and materials to create authentic wares and gifts. This is fun for all the family and a great way to learn a new skill in stunning surroundings.

What is a traditional Fijian kava ceremony?

Fiji is a country brimming with fascinating history, ancient traditions and a vibrant culture that we're endlessly proud to embody here at the Jean-Michel Cousteau Resort.

The kava ceremony is just one of the time-honoured practises held at our five star luxury resort. But just what can you expect from this world-renowned ritual?

Find out what a kava ceremony involves below.

What is kava?

Kava is a traditional, non-alcoholic Fijian drink made from the ground root of the piper mythisticum – a type of black pepper plant grown in the Pacifics. It contains a number of natural active chemicals known as kava lactones. These have been found to produce a number of effects such as muscle relaxation, medicinal benefits and a slight numbing sensation – all of which are safe if consumed in moderation.

Upon harvest, kava is ground and mixed with water to dilute the substance for safe consumption. It's then strained to deliver an earthy flavour and appearance, ready for drinking at special events and ceremonial occasions.

Are you ready to experience a kava ceremony?Kava plants can grow up to 2.5 metres tall!

What happens in a traditional kava ceremony?

Kava is often consumed as part of a tradtional ceremony at local Fijian villages. If you're lucky enough to join, there are a few rules you must adhere to. Before entering a village, visitors must first gain formal permission from the chief. This traditional protocol is otherwise known as sevusevu and involves the presentation of kava to the village chief on arrival.

When joining our complimentary excursion to the local village of Nukubalavu, the sevusevu is done on your behalf. If you do meet the chief during this visit, it's important to stay below his eye level to avoid causing disrespect. Always bow, introduce yourself and back away without turning away.

When accepting this traditional Fijian drink, clap once with cupped hands, take the drink, and consume the entirety of it. Once finished, return the cup to the person who gave it to you and clap strongly three times. You may feel a slight numbing sensation on your tongue, but kava is considered very safe to drink in small quantities. However, if you are on any type of medication or are of ill-health, we suggest politely declining this drink. If this is the case, extend both hands outwards with your thumbs overlapping and say 'vinaka', which means no thank you.

You may feel a slight numbing sensation on your tongue, but kava is considered very safe to drink in small quantities.

How the Jean-Michel Cousteau Resort can bring you closer to the action

Guests of the Jean-Michel Cousteau Resort can partake in a traditional kava ceremony most evenings and when joining our complimentary excursion to the local village of Nukubalavu.

We're extremely proud of our heritage and work to practise various traditional Fijian traditions wherever possible. Guests can experience a cultural lovo feast, take part in a Fijian story-telling session and of course, immerse yourself in the unforgettable kava ceremony.
